Parents' Comments
Parent #1
I love the atmosphere at Gan Shalom, loving, playful, respectful of the children, honoring religious differences while instilling in children gratitude for their blessings and love for God. They manage to stand back in a way that allows the children to play and develop without adult interference and yet help them learn social skills and interaction with their peers. My first child entered school with difficulty interacting with others his age or adults and after 6 months had blossomed into a loving outgoing playful child. My second child was obsessed with wearing his pajamas at school, at first they cherished his differences and then slowly they suggested it might be better for him to wear clothes and he transitioned without much difficulty almost instantly to wearing clothes at school. Honestly it's unclear to me how much my children just were ready to change themselves and how much Gan did, but it was clear that their loving support of different stages and never forcing change, was very helpful to my kids.

The school is very good in nurturing community among the children, teaching them caring social skills, not allowing exclusion in play etc. It teaches strong Jewish values in a creative, open way, without being dogmatic.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:

What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
