Parents' Comments
Parent #1
A terrific school where my child has flourished. There is a great outdoor space for kids of different ages can find challenging activities. I have spent a lot of time there observing and the teachers are very watchful and involved in what's going on out on the playground, it's not a free for all. Inside there is a dedicated art teacher and a room crammed with books where they do reading; there is also a lot of emphasis on singing and music, more so than anywhere we've seen. People looking for the pre-Ks to sit down and work at desks in a regimented fashion won't be happy here, but all at once my son learned to read entire books this year just after turning 5, and all the kids there graduate 'school-ready'. Staff are caring, intelligent, loving, and have all worked for FS a long time, some for many years. Even though I work and this is not a full-day school, I still sent my child there because what it lacked convenience-wise, it made up for in its caring for my son. We were at another SM preschool which was academic but not at all loving, and my son has blossomed in a short period at First Step. Parent community is cohesive but they don't make you do loads of 'busywork' like some schools. So, the only disadvantage with this place for me was the hours but I've put that concern aside because my son was so happy when we spent a day there seeing if it was right for him -- it was one of those decisions that was so easy.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:

What school type is right for your child? Is one model better than another? What does the research say?
