Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
An attempt to redirect the child or children toward alternative activities or playmates. When redirection does not work the child is often asked to sit with the teacher for a few minutes. Always a firm voice (never yelling) is used to remind the child they are to use 'friendly words,' 'gentle hands,' or 'keep their hands on their own bodies.'
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
We tell Child B if they are upset that it is okay for Child A to have other friends and that A & B are still good friends. We would encourage Child B to join another group of children or help them create their own activity to make themselves happy.
