Discipline

Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
Our discipline is gentle but firm. When needed, the teacher will redirect the child to an appropriate activity. The teacher will then spend time with the child in order to get the child back on track. If the negative behavior continues, the child will receive verbal warnings and a firm conversation with the teacher. When necessary, the child will be given a time out within the classroom and in view of the teacher. The child could also be brought to the Director for time away from the classroom in order to help him or her regain self control.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
The teachers would redirect the child feeling left out and help that child find another friend to play with or the teachers would talk to all three children together to help them find an activity they could all play.
Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
This is a very clean school! It has been renovated and is often repainted. The interior and the grounds are impeccable and much nicer than any of the other preschools that I visited. The school often raises money for new outdoor play equipment. Discipline is handled well here. One child in my son's classroom was asked to leave due to behavioral problems. He was making the whole class upset. I think the school handled it well. I think it was right to have the child leave since it was affecting everyone. The teacher sat the kids down and told the class that the reason the other child had to leave was not because he was 'bad' but because he and his parents felt that he would be happier staying home for one more year and starting school the following year. I thought it was handled well.
Parent #2
I feel completely confident when I leave my son at this school. It is safe, clean and well monitored.
