OVERALL RATING (4.6) Four And Half Stars

Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline

We use a 'Positive Discipline' approach. Our method of discipline is the beginning of a life long training process that helps promote self-control. Our emphasis encourages children to learn more appropriate and effective ways to meet their needs. Our teachers model for children appropriate interaction with others. The acceptable methods of guidance include: logical and natural consequences, anticipation of potential problems, redirection and problem-solving techniques, always in loving and nurturing ways. Limits made clear and consistent are discussed with children to make sure they understand. Talking about the problem, their feelings and choices available helps children understand. If a child is continually having too hard a time being in an area with others, teachers can require the child to choose another activity in a different area until they can return without disruption.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

Typically, teachers would ask Child A why he/she does not want to play with Child B. Then, depending on the answer, Child B would be asked how he/she feels when Child A doesn't like to play with Child B and to tell Child A about these feelings. Teachers would ask Child A what game or activity is going to be played and how can Child B participate. The message would be that 'everyone plays, no one is excluded.' Teachers would continue to monitor or facilitate play until all children involved are actively engaged.
