Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
The underlying principle is that there should be reasonable, well established rules that children can understand and that provide the security of knowing that adults are there to be supportive and helpful. When a situation occurs, children are encouraged to express their feelings verbally. Teachers are there to be supportive and to intervene when necessary. A child may need to be redirected into another area of the classroom if a problem continues. Positive reinforcement is used to change undesirable behavior. Time out is used as a last resort.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
We would encourage everyone to play together. We could talk to child A about words that can hurt feelings.
