Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
The teachers at Maple Street show children how to interact appropriately through mediation and modeling. We treat conflict as a time for children to learn to use their words and learn how to express their needs verbally instead of physically. We encourage children to be independent problem solvers but the teachers are always on hand to observe and to step in to help resolve disputes when necessary. It is not unusual to see a teacher and a student engaged in a problem-solving discussion at the Maple Street School. Teachers help the children find ways to resolve a conflict and to understand each others feelings. We believe that resolving conflict is another opportunity for children to grow and learn together.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
We would observe carefully first, and watch to see if child B expresses his/her thoughts. We then would talk about how B feels, and support B. Finally, we would explain that three friends can play together. Our words may differ depending on the age/development and specific child involved. We strive to be a caring, inclusive community
Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
The school is very close to Prospect Park which they take excellent advantage of. My kids go to the playground/ park twice a day, for walks around the neighborhood and even on the shuttle train on rainy days! There is a safety committee which oversees the safety issues involved with all this activity.
Parent #2
they use the Lincoln Road Playground to play- not specific school only outside sspace.
