Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline
Since the children are free to choose their own activities for most of the morning, discipline is usually not needed. The children work on something until it no longer interests them, and then they move on to another activity. No one is making them complete certain tasks at given time intervals. If a child is having difficulty with an activity, we just use redirection. It works about 99% of the time! When redirection doesn't work, the teachers give the child a set of choices. In rare circumstances, we just talk to the child, and have him think about what he has done. Mostly it is a time to calm down, and discuss which actions are appropriate, and which ones are inappropriate.
Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario
Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'
As every child is unique, we would handle each situation in a way that would best meet the needs of the children. We don't dictate with whom anyone must play. Rather, we foster social awareness by encouraging kindness to others. If a child feels left out, we will offer redirection and other opportunities.
Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety
Parent #1
Our preschool has been around for a long time, and although the building may not be brand new and shiny, I feel the love and warmth that exudes from the classrooms where so many children have passed through over the years more than make up for the lack of sparkle!
Parent #2
Temperature control is shared with a church nursery school, so sometimes it can get cool or warm in a section of the building. Parents bring the snacks and are asked to bring nutritious foods, but sometimes cookies sneak in.

Wise Words to Remind You to Watch the Amazing Show of Childhood
One of the most dog-eared and spine-cracked books on our Savvy Parenting Shelf is Wendy Mogel's The Blessing of a Skinned Knee . This month's look at the big picture of parenting and childhood prompted yet another return to the wisdom in Dr. Mogel's pages:
