Discipline

OVERALL RATING (4.1) Four Stars

Parents at this school, on average, believe that conflicts between children:
...are handled extraordinarily well in a way that not only gives me confidence in the safety of my child but also reassures me that my child (and his/her peers) are learning the early skills needed to socialize effectively with one another

Director's Description to School's Approach to Discipline

Our ultimate goal for discipline is to generate self-discipline. This is achieved through a positive learning process that is based on having reasonable expectations of children, and a learning environment that inspires and motivates them. Children take responsibility for their actions and strive toward positive resolutions. Emphasis is on developing strong self-esteem and independence.

Director's Response to a Sample Discipline Scenario

Description of how teachers handle the following scenario: Child A and Child B are good friends and usually play together. One day, Child A decides to play with Child C and tells Child B, 'I don't want to play with you today. I'm playing with Child C instead.'

We respect a child's right to choose their friends, however, we understand that a situation like this might be difficult for a young child (Child B) to understand. Teacher's role would be to insure that Child A understands that someone's feelings might be hurt as a result of their action. Problem solving would generate ways in which Child A might think about how Child B is affected, or ways in which Child A could talk to Child B to help him feel better. In all cases it is not assumed that the teacher would require a child to play with another child, but rather help them understand the consequences of their action and ways they might temper it. The lesson is to inspire empathy and concern for Child B's situation. A teachable moment for Child A.

Parents' Notes on Discipline, Health and Safety

Parent #1
Having visited many preschools in SF, I thought -- on first visit -- that ELC was a bit dingy and in need of a renovation. However, everything is clean and the equipment is safe. My child loves and takes full advantage of all the toys, books, art supplies, etc. and the space -- while small and cramped-feeling for adults -- is ideal for the 3-5 year old set.
