Projects are open-ended, children are encouraged to create what they want. Toys are simple and require imagination. The block area is quite large. Primary color paints are used.
Parents' Comments
Parent #1
All areas of curriculum get particular teacher input as well as directed play and free play.
Parent #2
There are lots of crafts and book-making. Kids make paper, jewelry, beads, and just incredible crafts constantly. A parent comes in once a week to teach music and movement. There are science experiments and observations (butterflies hatching, seedling projects), big paper mache projects and an amazing giant circus at the end of the year. Everything is child-led, but teacher-structured. So for example the teacher decides to offer a paper mache project, but the kids decide what to make and what it will look like.
Parent #3
Chickpeas follows a child-centered learn through play philosophy. Play with blocks is very important as is painting and play with water/bubbles/sand/rice. Children are encouraged in imaginary play. The children can move among the various stations as they like during free playtime, however, the school day is structured with activities, circle time, story time, rest time, snack and lunchtime happening at the same time each day.
