Family Values and the Preschool Curriculum

Buy the eBook

Sometimes, your family's values may affect the content you want for your child at preschool. These are frequently subjects, topics and areas of early child development that you value very strongly, regardless of your child's capabilities or interest. Common examples include academic readiness in basic subjects, religion and morals, foreign language acquisition (or native language development for immigrants), and other areas of development: social, emotional, physical, artistic, musical, or the well-rounded "whole child."

What should you look for when choosing a preschool if one of these things is very important to you?

Family Values and The Preschool Search

Priority for Choosing? What To Seek in a Preschool Example Questions to Ask

High Priority:

  • You value particular content and you need for preschool to cover it

Low Priority:

  • You do not have particular values about content beyond the usual Or you can address your values outside of preschool
  • Preschool clearly describes curriculum content, so you know what will be covered

  • School has materials needed to teach the content

  • Significant time in preschool schedule spent on the content you value

  • Teachers have appropriate background, training or specialist help, if needed, for special content (e.g., foreign languages, religion)

Is [your valued content] covered in the curriculum? How? Do all teachers cover this content area?

How much time each day or week is spent on this content?

Do teachers who cover this content have special backgrounds or training? Describe.
